Holiness and Heroism: Lunch-time Conversation
Tuesday 30 November 2010Inspired by recent events and recently published books, including In the Land of Larks and Heroes, SA Council of Churches invites you to a conversation where we can share insights and conversation about holiness and heroism from our various traditions and experience of faith.
In the Land of Larks and Heroes is an Australian anthology of writings, prompted by the canonisation of Mary MacKillop, about recognising a saint. It contains reflections on sainthood and heroes from within different religious traditions and different Christian denominations. Contributors were invited to illustrate how holy persons and heroes are esteemed in their own tradition and how this might frame that traditions appreciation of Mary MacKillop.
One of the Contributors, Mary Cresp (a Sister of St Joseph), will introduce us to the book as we offer our own insights about holiness and heroism from our various and diverse experience of faith.
John Chryssavgis, Greek Orthodox and theological advisor to the Ecumenical Patriarch on environmental issues, writes: Mary MacKillop’s canonisation is first and foremost a recognition of the holiness of numerous others, unknown and unnamed, who lived and worked with this land - black and white, older and newer immigrants. This is surely part of her ecumenical and even ecological legacy.
